Hiring a Wedding DJ: What to Expect

December 7, 2017

For many brides- and grooms-to-be, hiring a DJ for the wedding is the first time that either the bride or groom has ever worked with a DJ. But rest assured—working with a DJ is incredibly easy, and the right DJ will help your wedding day go seamlessly. Here is a look at what to expect when you hire DJ How You Want It for your wedding.

Talking logistics

We usually start by talking logistics with our couples. We’re happy to meet with couples in person or over the phone—whichever is easier for you. We generally just need a little information from you to get started, including the names of the bride and groom, wedding date, time of the event, venue, and contact information. We’ll also discuss specifics on when you’d like to music to start and when one of our DJs can begin with setup. (Your venue can answer these questions for you if you are unsure.) If there are any other details you would like us to know, such as wedding colors, desired lighting, desired mood for the reception, and needing a photobooth, we love to hear about those as well.

Choosing the music

You can be as involved as you want to be when it comes to choosing the music. The music is 100 percent up to the bride and groom, and we can even accept requests from close family members if desired. You can give us an entire playlist, and if there are not enough songs to cover the full span of the reception, we can add more to it based on the genres you provide. If you’d rather give us just a couple songs, we can take over in choosing music that will suit your event and tastes.

We normally have our clients select the songs they want by making a Spotify playlist and sharing it, which you can do even on free Spotify accounts. This way, we’ll know that we have  the correct versions of all the songs you want. After settling on a playlist, we put that playlist directly onto the digital workstation that connects to our turntables. The advantage to pairing Spotify with our turntables is that we can always handle unexpected song requests that may come up during the reception, as Spotify grants you access to virtually everything.

If you would rather not work with Spotify, you can always simply write out a playlist, email us a list, or try assembling playlists through other music oriented sites or apps. The goal is to make choosing music as easy as possible for you, all while ensuring that we match every request precisely.

Working with the venue

Every venue has a different setup, so we always go through a checklist of things we’ll need for each venue based on its amenities. The most important thing we need to know about a venue is whether it’s indoors or outdoors, and whether there will be Wi-fi access. We work with venues frequently, so we are will experienced in adapting to different environments and adhering to special regulations.

Getting references

We like to make sure our couples are ready for their wedding in all aspects. So if you’re struggling to find a videographer, venue, pastry chef, etc., we are happy to refer you to someone we know.

On your wedding day

When you hire us for your wedding music needs, you won’t need to worry about anything music related on your wedding day. And since we’re event DJs, we don’t just play music. We are able to host your event and ensure that everything on the agenda goes smoothly and stays punctual. We talk with all of our couples beforehand about how involved they would like their DJ to be during their event, from offering background music and subtle announcements to offering plenty of humor and commentary.
